Train & Bus
Train: It might happen but it is quite unlikely that you arrive in Windhoek by train. Some more adventurous might arrive with the standard TransNamib StarLine passenger trains. Generally if tourists arrive by train they come with the luxury Desert Express or its South African counterparts like Rovos Rail. You will arrive at the colonial main train station in the heart of Windhoek. You can walk to many hotels within the city centre from here or you should have arranged a pick up from the station.
Bus: Arriving in Windhoek by bus is possible and under locals pretty popular. Minibuses, so called “Ovambotaxis” are permanently arriving and leaving from Windhoek mostly to the northern regions. The more regular buses which are also suitable for tourists (Intercape Mainliner, Ekonolux) and luxury minibuses (e.g. Townhoppers) are arriving at the main bus stop right at Independence Avenue (corner to Fidel Castro Street) opposite of the Gustav Voigts Centre (Kalahari Sands Hotel & Casino) at the currently build Freedom Plaza. The Intercape Mainliner is driving from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town (all in South Africa) via Grünau, Keetmanshoop, Mariental and Rehoboth to Windhoek. From here the bus is either going to the west via Karibib and Usakos to Swakopmund or to the north via Okahandja, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Tsumeb, Grootfontein, Rundu and Katima Mulilo to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe). Many private shuttle services are operating a day to day service within Windhoek or from Windhoek to any place in Namibia like Swakopmund or Etosha.
