Windhoek is accessible on perfect tar roads or well-maintained gravel roads from Okahandja (north), Rehoboth (south), Gobabis (east), Walvis Bay (west) or Swakopmund (west). On the roads to / from Windhoek one has to pass a permanent police check point just outside of Windhoek. Make sure you stop here (even if you do not see any police around) at the stop signs (not at the stopping lines!) and be prepared to answer questions (“Where do you come from?”, “Where do you go to?”) and to show your drivers license. In case of a foreign car, make sure you have the receipt of the Road Fund Administration payment (from the border crossing) on hand and double check that your car has the nationality sign sticker at the back (e.g. “ZA” for South Africa). Otherwise be prepared to get a fine to be paid at the next police station.

General rule: Do never even try to bribe or argue… be polite and open minded!
