Aircraft
Most of the international overseas tourists arrive in Windhoek by plane at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) a mere 45 km outside the city centre to the east. Others arriving by plane from South Africa might (in case of Air Namibia) also arrive at the city airport Eros (ERS) on the southern outskirts of the city centre (approx. 5 km away).
Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA): This is the only airport connecting Namibia with Europe. Arriving there is hassle free. You reach the customs and immigration hall by foot (and not by bus or gangway) after landing. All you can do here is to start queuing at the immigration counters. Only those on transit should turn to the right immediately after entering the terminal building.
As a non-Namibian national you have to queue at the international counters (or the diplomat or crew member counter). Getting through immigration normally takes only a few minutes and up to 60 minutes at the most. Please make sure that you filled in all information on the arrival/departure form. The immigration officer might ask you some questions and then stamps your passport with two stamps. Please double check the days you get on your tourist permit (1 to a maximum of 90 days) and that those match with your planned stay. Behind immigration you will reach the baggage hall with the two baggage conveyor belts. Most of the times the screens do not show anything or they show on the left (first) belt that you luggage arrives here. Anyway, it will in most cases not, or at least not only. Consequently make sure, that you check both belts for your luggage. For those travelers that are on a hunting trip, make sure you get your rifles at the small window to your left before reaching the conveyor belts. You also have to fill in some forms here, but overall it is not a complicate process and only takes about 10-15 minutes. Once you picked up your luggage you can go through the green (nothing to declare) or red channel (if you have anything to declare for customs). Whatever colour you choose, be prepared to get your luggage checked. After that you will reach the arrival hall where – in most cases - a representative of your car rental company will meet you. Here you can also exchange money, draw money from the Bank Windhoek ATM (no MasterCard or affiliate like Maestro), get brochures from the tourist information, etc. You can get from here by rented car, private shuttle, taxi or airport bus to Windhoek.
Eros Airport is a small airport right in Windhoek. Arriving here on one of the very few international flights from South Africa or all national flights is as straight forward as at Hosea Kutako International. It will in most cases even take less of your time as planes are smaller and thus fewer people are travelling.
