Post, Telecommunication

Telephone:From Windhoek you can IDD (International Direct Dial) to more than 200 countries in the world. As a traveler it is quite pricey to use the telephones in your hotel, as they have special rates. You can easily buy a FlexiCall Card at any Telecom Namibia outlet and use it with the public phones. However, most travellers prefer to use a mobile / cell phone for communication.

More information regarding FlexiCall Card at www.telecom.na.

Mobile: You can in most cases (depending on you home country contract and network provider) use your SIM-Card for roaming in Namibia. All Namibian mobile networks are based on GSM 900/1800 standard. Consequently, you will need a suitable phone. Please note, that roaming is very expensive, especially if you get called from your home country. It is recommended to switch off your mailbox / voicemail or better do not use your mobile phone at all. In this case you can easily buy a Starter Pack (around €2) including some airtime and a SIM-Card with your own number in Namibia. You can recharge (buy airtime) at any network outlet, supermarket, etc.

Internet:Most hotels offer you at least the possibility to check eMails from time to time. Larger hotels also have Internet connections (wireless or not) within the rooms and / or public hotel areas. Some do offer WiFi Hotspots. Internet Cafés are readily available and charges are low, however, you must deal with slow lines, as ADSL is only coming up in Windhoek. Many people use mobile Internet connections through WiMAX or their cell phone providers. Costs are around N$1 per MB and connection is also possible with a prepaid SIM-Card.

A standard letter within Namibia costs N$ 2.50, international letters depending on zones between N$ 3.70 and N$ 4.80 per 10 g and post cards N$ 3.90. Post box rental starts at N$ 218.20 annually and private bags at N$ 327.20.
