Walking through Windhoek is easy and a good mode of transport (at least at daylight). Most of the natural and historical sights can easily be reached on foot. Several tour operators also have walking tours in Windhoek on their itinerary, nevertheless, you can also do them on your own!

A good way to explore Windhoek to see the sights off the normal tourist track, is the Katutura Heritage Route.The route was established in 2001. It is a walking route, however, covers a distance of 15 km and more.

• It starts at Independence Avenue with the Zoo Park,
• goes up hill to the Christuskirche and
• north towards Kenya House (where Old Location, the former suburb of the blacks, was situated) and to
• the Old Location Cemetery at Hochland Road.
• Along the the Western Bypass the route enters Katurura along the Independence Avenue. Here one can explore Sowetp Market and Kakurukaze Magunda market.
• Proceeding along Independence Avenue the route turns into a dusty road towards Penduka Village.
