Sport Venues

Sport venues exist throughout Windhoek and most of the schools have their own sports fields. The larger venues of national and international standard are on and around the Olympia Sports Ground in the southern part of Windhoek but also in Katutura and like the Tony Rust Race Tracks a few kilometers outside the city.

The Olympia Sports Ground is the national sports ground and home to all national stadiums (except Sam Nujoma Stadium). Here are most of the sports clubs and still a lot of open space for further sports development (e.g. a beach soccer stadium is planned). Besides the three big stadiums a Juksei court, a public swimming pool, Angling Club and the Sportklub Windhoek as well as Deutscher Turn- und Sportverein are located here.

  • Independence Stadium
The largest stadium in Namibia is the Independence Stadium. Besides being the national stadium for football competitions, it also functions as a venue for exhibitions, the independence celebrations (every year on 21 March), athletic and other sport competitions. 25,000 spectators can be seated.
  • National Tennis Stadium
The National Tennis Stadium located in the north-eastern parts of the Sports Ground is home to Namibia's tennis elite. There are seven courts including the Centre Court with a seating capacity of 3,000.
  • Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium
The Hage Geingob Stadium is the largest and national rugby stadium in Namibia. It offers space for 12,000 spectators. All of the National Team matches are played here.

Main sport stadiums apart from those on the Olympia Sports Ground are:

  • Sam Nujoma Stadium
This is most modern stadium in Namibia and was opened in 2005. It offers seating for 10,300 spectators and an artificial turf. Some of the matches of the National Football team are played here.
  • Wanderers Stadium
The Wanderes Sports Ground is one of the largest sporting areas in Windhoek. The Wanderers Stadium is the main Cricket stadium in Windhoek.
